Introduction
In this volume, we have selected articles that discuss the complex relationship between TV drama—arguably the most important field of cultural production and ideological expression—and modern Chinese culture. The researches approach the topic from various angles.  One article looks at the macro level from TV production; one takes a more intimate look at the consumption and reception of such products.  By looking at the relationship between literature and TV productions, and examining the lineage and rupture of the Revolution legacy in China from the revolutionary period to the economic period, one also closely discusses the role of TV drama in ways of cultural representation and their meanings in the contemporary Chinese political culture.  At the 20th anniversary of the publishing of the Korean leftist magazine Munhwa/Kwahak (Culture/Science), we have selected articles that discuss thoughts and the cultural atmosphere in contemporary Korea, as an introduction to a social and intellectual movement, but also as a way to better understand the political situation in the East Asian region, and a thought experiment of other possible worlds. This volume also features insightful researches on “development” and “growth”, with “Afterword” by the editors, which hopefully would open up space for further discussions.
